Tropical Storm Hits Philippines

Manila, the Philippine’s, saw its heaviest rain in more than four decades, when 40 cm of water fell on the city within 12 hours. Tropical Storm ‘Ketsana’ hit the Philippines with winds of up to 100 km an hour, early on Saturday September 26th.

1.8 million people have been affected by this natural disaster. 300 deaths have been recorded so far. ACCWM fieldworkers in Manila, Mark (and Christine) Pedder, said that water is still 8 metres deep in the worst affected areas. People have been left without water, food and power.

The country has appealed for foreign aid to help more than 450,000 people displaced by the disaster. About 380,000 have been brought to about 200 schools, churches and other evacuation shelters. Those displaced have lost everything and are now at risk of contracting water and airborne diseases.

30 people have died in Danang province, Vietnam, and 11 people have died in Cambodia.

ACC World Relief is holding an appeal and aims to raise $40,000. These funds will go towards the purchasing and distrubution of food packages, clean water, medicines, replacing of roofs and buying building materials.
