An earthquake measuring 7.0 struck just outside the capital Port-au-Prince, in Haiti at 4:53pm local time on 12 Jan 2010. With up to 33 aftershocks ranging in magnitude from 4.2 to 5.9, it was reported to be the strongest to hit the country in more than two centuries.
Currently the land lies devastated, already known as the poorest country in the western hemisphere, it now sits in ruins after the destruction of the quake.
Rescue teams are working tirelessly to try to free the thousands who are trapped under rubble. Officials fear the death toll will reach 100, 000.
It has also been estimated that 3 million people are in need of emergency aid, particularly water, food, shelter and medical assistance.
