Laos Women’s Micro-enterprise
Laos Women’s Microenterprise Project (LWMP) aims to set up a sewing co-operative among Lao women in both Vientiane and Pak Xong. In doing so, the LWMP will provide women with a life-skill that will empower them with an innate sense of dignity, self-worth and pride.
Laos is one of the poorest and least ‘developed’ countries in S.E. Asia. Poverty is a reality in everyday life, and consistent with trends in developing countries, females in Laos experience greater difficulties than males.
By providing women with a life-skill, sewing, they can set up a small tailoring business. This will then produce an income that will help their family with basic necessities like school uniforms for their children and essential medical care.
Each tailoring business created will become a model for others to reproduce on a small scale. This means the women can assist each other in creating small businesses to help fund their family.
