Myanmar Cyclone

Situation

On the 2nd May, 2008, powerful Cyclone Nargis hit the southern coast of Myanmar, in the Irrawaddy Delta Region. The storm lasted for ten hours with rain and winds peaking at 190km per hour. The official death toll  was over 30,000 with an additional 41,000 missing. This places Cyclone Nargis as having the highest death toll from a natural disaster in Asia since the 2004 Tsunami.

ACC International Relief’s Response

ACC International Relief launched an appeal to provide short-term emergency relief assistance to communities affected by Cyclone Nargis and over $160,000 was raised.

With local partnerships, ACC International Relief was able to provide basic relief to communities within the Irrawaddy district in the following ways:

  • Distribution of food parcels, which assisted 210 families. Each parcel included cooking staples; rice, cooking oil, dal, salt, fish paste, dried fish, onion, potato, Chinese tea leaf
  • Rebuilding of new homes
  • Provision of essential items for income generation, including fishing nets and boats
  • Water and sanitation projects
  • Medical care and disease prevention through medical supplies, education and immunisations
