Sichuan Earthquake

Situation

This devastating earthquake, measuring 7.9 on the Richter scale, struck on May 12th 2008 and left nearly 70,000 dead, many thousands injured and an estimated 5 million people homeless (UN News).

ACC International Relief’s Response

ACC International Relief raised over $60,000 for this appeal which provided emergency relief assistance to communities in Mianyang, Anxiam and the mountain areas of Sichuan Province.

ACC International Relief in partnership with Asian Outreach achieved the following:

  • Assisted  approximately 718 households/ 2,280 people for two weeks by providing meat and vegetables to supplement government provided noodles and rice so as to provide a balanced, nutritious, high energy diet
  • Provided assistance to 27 families whose children died in the earthquake

  • Supplied water buckets to households in Shan Shan

  • Provided 1,200 beds for Xiang Feng Qiao community

  • Reestablished a water pipe to reconnect Xian Double River Village water supply

  • Protected rain-damaged houses with 2000 square feet of polythene sheets until repairs were made

  • Constructed a basic medical clinic to provide service to a number of villages

  • Provided medical treatment and one month’s supply of medicines and medical supplies

  • Reestablished livelihoods of vegetable farmers through provision of plastic sheeting shelter for their crops

  • Funded travel costs, enabling emergency relief teams to provide help in a timely manner
